Guy Allion, Domaine du Haut Perron, Touraine

Cedric has taken over the running of the estate from his father in the village of Thesée in Touraine, up river from Tours. Young and ambitious he combines traditional varieties with modern techniques.

Simply one of the top producers, on ancient vineyards, now using biodynamic techniques. A demi-sec i.e. off-dry, with some residual sugar but the Chenin Blanc gives wonderful balancing acidity, one of my absolute favourites.

Domaine Alain Gautheron, Chablis

A fifth generation family estate of some 22 ha. This Premiere Cru comes from some of the best slopes around the town of Chablis. 100% Chardonnay, with temperature controlled stainless steel fermentation, a fine, dry, crisp minerally wine with excellent length - as good Chablis should be.

Cave d'Azé - Macon

From a relatively small, well-respected co-operative in the Maconnaise I have selected our "House" Burgundies. Founded in 1927 but using the latest techniques and equipment. The prestige Cuvée Jules Richard is 100% unoaked Chardonnay, clean, fresh and lively, while the red, 100% Pinot Noir Bourgogne Rouge has well judged oak-ageing and soft red berry fruit.

Bernard Burle in the southern Rhone has produced a big burly blend of Syrah and Grenache reflecting the sun and warmth of the south of France, spicy dark fruits with a touch of black pepper.

Jean-Claude Raspail, Saillans (Organic Sparkling)

From an unusual appellation in the foothills of the Alps off the Rhone. An organic producer of Clairette de Die a delightful, light, frothy, sweet, sparkling wine. We also have their Cremant; made in the "traditional" method, with extended ageing on the lees, giving a complexity to put many a Champagne to shame.

Vila Corona, Costres del Segre

A winery high in the foothills of the Pyrenees, benefiting from the cooling air from the mountains. This year I’ve taken three red varietals from them: a Merlot, a Cabernet Sauvignon (both receiving sympathetic use of oak) and a Ull de Llebre (aka Tempranillo) light and herby. (We also have their dry, perfumed Riesling). They all represent excellent value.

A small estate in the Baja Rioja making Joven (young), Crianza and Reserva reds, predominantly from the Tempranillo grape. Javier has a small modern Bodega and produces great value wines. New this year is a "Special Selection" wine, made with specially selected grapes from 50 year-old vines, low yields and healthy use of American oak, top notch, drinking now but many years ahead of it! (87 points Guia Penin).

Bortolin Angelo, Prosecco Valdobbiadene D.O.C.G.

One of Italy’s unique specialities from a small region just to the north of Treviso. This example comes from the heart of the region with vines growing on steep hillsides. The Prosecco grape here preforms to it’s optimum producing a lovely light aromatic sparkling wine.

Vincenzo Bossotti, Piedmonte

From the delightful Vincenzo and Chiara Bossotti in Piedmonte. Cisterna d’Asti, their village and their small winery is perched on the edge of the steep slopes of the rolling Roero hills. They are committed to minimum intervention in the vineyards (i.e. nearly Organic) and to quality, which is reflected in another collection of fine wines.

Luigino e Marco Provolo, Verona

From Italy’s biggest region for quality wines,in the hills behind Verona. We have one white, a Soave lookalike from 100% Garganega grapes, fresh, floral and fruity. The four reds are a wonderful example of the ascending levels of quality found in the area, all from a similar mix of local grape varieties. The first two Valpolicellas are light, fruity and refreshing but with some barrel and bottle age for the Gino; next a Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso - with oak and intensity coming from the process of extending the fermentation with the pressings from making the fourth classic wine: Amarone della Valpolicella.
